Is this common in Europe ? 1st time i ever see a car used as a base for camper conversion

Another proof that not only will the Dutch drive anything, they'll tow a caravan with anything !

In the past, I've seen dutch caravans towed by a small Daihatsu Charade, an Opel Manta GT/E, a 1973 Chevrolet sedan (repainted in bright orange with multiple racing stickers) and a 60-year old Citroën Traction Avant Légère.

It's not common at all. I don't remember ever seeing one for real. But it seems that it was a trend in the late 70s/early 80s. I remember having a small leaflet for a similar camper shell from a german company called FFB (IIRC there was an Opel Rekord on the cover). And I've just discovered on Google another one called the Gefaco Rucky. But contrary to the Toppola, those didn't need to remove the rear hatch first.

This '73 Chevy sedan wouldn't happen to be something full-sized, would it?

The Disco Sport is already common round here. Not yet seen an XE though they are meant to be selling well.

Yes, it was a big sedan, not a "Colonnade" car. But it could have been a '74, I don't know well those model years.

In the late-1950's, there was a company that let you add a camper roof rack on top of your car. It even contained an attached step ladder, but that was back in the day when cars were big enough for something like this.

Also, there have been occasions where people add campers onto everything from Volkswagen Beetles to old Cadillacs. I don't remember where I read it, but I believe cartoonist Jay Norwood Darling had a '60 Caddy with a camper on it before he died.

In the 80ies there were a few conversion -but not common at all- this Audi

Seen this afternoon, a rare Renault Mascott semi-trailer truck:



Same owner/driver for the last 15 years, a guy who takes great care of it even if using it daily for its work.

Things seen on recent Scottish island hopping - part 1: Tractors at Arran Heritage Museum, Brodick, Arran:















Plus some interesting tractor posters (but difficult to photo as behind glass and bright reflections - these are best efforts, even after sneakily switching off lights in the shed)









Museum is worth a visit for anyone passing - lots of interesting bits and pieces about Arran's geology, archaeology, history, recent past etc.

Things seen on recent Scottish island hopping - part 3: MG owners tour, Orkney









Photos taken at Ness of Brodgar dig. Apparently about 20 MGs came over - there were lots of shiny MGBs hurtling round the island plus a couple more MGRs spotted over a couple of days. Orkney tends to get a few classic tours in August - as I arrived, the ferry unloaded a batch of very shiny 60s/70s Fords - Escorts, Cortina 1600 E, a couple of blobby Mustangs from late 70s and 80s.

RV8 is Japanese spec. It has a vent where the foglights would be on a UK car (due to having air conditioning).
