Time to add a generation number [...]

Why is this generation item not being used for vehicles like the Ford F-Series or GM C/K-Series trucks, or for some other "long life" model names?

Because US vehicles are usually referred by their model years than their generation.
Originally that field was more for German and British vehicles, but some people started to use it for various other models, not sure it is always very accurate.
Anyway the vehicle handling of the new version of the site will solve that.

Whatever the generation and the model year, Step-Van(1) has been written with an hyphen by Chevrolet:

The GMC Value Van never had this attention :wink:

(1971 / 1975 brochures)
_____

1: Strict name search (modelMatch=2) gives 557 vehicles, while a "contains" search (modelMatch=0) provides 558 answers. If I'm not mistaken, there's no possibility to search only in the complement field with the search page, so I can't say which vehicle has it written that way.

Done.
And then I notice http://www.imcdb.org/vehicle_631534-Chevrolet-Step-Van-7-P-10-PS10535-1970.html
If P-10 is an a.k.a. name and not following Step-Van in the formal name, I think it is better to list it with P-10 as chassis code like we did for others.
Also, I'm not sure it is really relevant to include the "7" in the name, if that's just for the length.

Perhaps the "7" should go to the extra field since it defines the body length sold in that weight class.

Thanks!
And then I notice [...]

7 stands indeed for the 7 ft. long (7½ ft. exactly) of the first P-10 models, but:
Step-Van 7 is the whole official model line name of the P-10 from 1962 to 1980 and written that way in Chevrolet literature. The 1958-66 rounded P-20 and P-30 were then "just" Step-Van models;

P-10, P-20 and P-30 are not the code of these vans, but their model name, the same way C-10, C-20 and so on are for the C-Series trucks (hence the P-Series I propose as a generic name);
http://pics.imcdb.org/18713/1984step-vanbrochureexcerpt.jpg
(Excerpt of the 1984 Step-Van brochure)

• the 1965-66 Step-van line was made of Step-Van 7, (rounded) Step-Van and (boxy) Step-Van King models;
• the 1967-71 line proposed Step-Van 7 and Step-Van King models (boxy body, with the front face that it will have until the end of its production);
• 1972+: the 7 and King complements disappear on some brochures, but reappear from time to time;
• 1979 seems to be the last model year of the Step-Van 7 P-10.

I promised a post on Step-Van codes to rjluna2, but it sounds like a rediscovery of the whole story of these vans might be helpful to all of us :smile:

i don't know if it would be a mass change since i don't know how many they are but i saw some " made for CDN " Mercury Grand Marquis being called Ford Grand Marquis. all the Grand Marquis i've seen to date were wearing a Mercury emblem on the grille and trunklid. i know they were sold thru Ford dealers but all dealers i know here were Ford/Mercury ( even my grandfather's brand new at the time 1987 Mercury Topaz came from a Ford dealer ) with some having Lincoln as well

There is for example a comment there from a Canadian user saying they were registered as Ford:

It is possible that they were advertised as Mercury but registered as Ford for some technical reason.
We usually use the "commercial" name, so in such case we would use Mercury.

Could be...never bought one ( and not exactly planning to do so.. :smile: ).
Just weird that the name on the registration is not the same than what its written on the car.... :crazy:

Willys-Overland / Willys CJ-3A with a default model year should be set as 1949 models, as this vehicle was produced from 1949 to 1953.
(Sources: Willys-Overland Production Figures 1945-1961, CJ-3A Owner's Photos & Serial Number Database, The Civilian Jeep Model CJ-3A / Dating a CJ-3A and a few other websites)

There is also certainly something to do with the Willys-Overland / Willys make name, as the company name was Willys-Overland until Kaiser bought it in 1953.
But information I have found for now about the use of the Willys only name is conflicting: some pre-1953 ads use WO, some others just Willys...

You mean I should change all those 1948-1951 to 1949, or only change the 1948 to 1949 ?

All to 1949, although I might have manually changed the 3 1950 ones: I checked the three of them, and this year is (inaccurately) given as unveiling one.

Almost all our North American-spec Ford Cargos are generically listed as CF-7000. The CF6000, CF8000, and CFT8000 have been left out. Should they be changed to CF-Series instead?

I think so, unless individual ones can be confirmed as one of those.

The T in CFT-8000 means Tandem rear axle, so those ones would be easy to spot.
