It doesn't make much sense. The official site still advertises the personalized plates (6 or 5 characters) without warning... Non-personalized plates might look like this:

Old ones were not really free: I remember having paid something like 2000 BEF as fee for registering my car and get the rear plate (and then buy a front plate... I haven't found where you could get that one for free either )

The only true reason why the Belgian government is so eager to apply those black digits on white background plates is that they have found out that those plates are better readable by the many expensive-ticket-issuing traffic cameras. If there is such a camera on each street corner in the Netherlands, in Flanders they also put an extra camera inbetween street corners. Wallonia was somewhat lagging behind but is catching up fast.
A free front plate is easy to obtain at many garages/ vehicle dealers, you only have to buy a new car there ...

Yes, indeed for the front plate you often get it when buying the car (though that I had to buy one when they forced everyone to switch to reflective plates: I bought my car just before that)

That is still the old Belgian font, it will be changed as well.
Based on DIN 1451. And it's not the proposed combination either, so probably not what the new plates will look like.

A friend from my license-plate-collector's forum has seen recently a quite new Porsche 911 with the Belgian plate 4.S.911.
Isn't that a very old combination? And is it possible to get such old ones today a personalized plaes?

That's combination from the 60s but still valid

873 euro for a combination of five characters or 620 euro for a six character plate. About 1700 are registered per year, so that's a minimum of 1,000,000 euro extra cash for the royal family. Most of it goes to haircuts.

Ruby red in stead of the current red... Typical compromise.
I'm glad they're not black on white (or worse yellow) though.

I wonder why they just added a digit and kept current system for all plates (except eur/euro plates)
It really looks like a useless change.
They could have used one of the number ranges for special purposes (taxis, bikes, trailers, etc.)
And poor bikes who will get a gigantic plate.
And why don't the royal, parliament etc. get a plate in the same range as euro plates? That's not fair that they can keep their short number

What's most pointless is adding a "1 - " to fill up space.

with exactly the same number of combinations. (Far more than necessary)
I didn't know the old plates were orange. Obviously made extra pale for the photo.

What I wonder is why they did not change the font, now that there is lots of space on the plate.
That font is awful, in many other EU countries the plates are much more readable.

So the two small German companies, who wanted to offer plastic plates and a illuminated plate, were pressed by them from the market.
