Site moving to a new server
Published 13/03/2018 @ 20:55:25, By antp
In the next days the site will be moved to a new server.
This will probably start on Friday. When starting the process, the site will be "locked" so no change can be done to it while pictures are copied from the old server to the new one, which may take a few hours.
Then until the DNS servers all around the world apply the address change it may take up to 24h for all visitors to reach the new server instead of the old one.
The hardware of the new server is similar to the old one, but with a newer version of the OS I'll be able to easily enable HTTPS (finally!)
This also provides a new version of PHP (7 instead of 5) which may improve speed a little, but required a few changes in the code (what I just finished).
The new server is in a Canadian datacenter, so the new sever may appear slightly faster for the North-American user.
Stay tuned for more info.

Will the new server have larger web space for all those pictures to store there?

Yes, nothing to do at your side, just check the notice message at the top of the site if it changes

- Main pictures: 50%
- Thumbnails: 0%
- Comment pictures: 0%
- Comment thumbnails: 0%
Of course the two "Thumbnail" steps will faster than the two other ones
I hope I'll be able to finish that today, since tomorrow I won't have time to continue it on Saturday until the evening (CET)
If all goes well, the site on the new server will be available in its "locked" state (like the current one) to check that all is working well until Saturday evening, and at that time it will be "unlocked" to be used as normal again.

All done.
If you see a message "If you still see this message it means that you are still directed to the old server" at the top of the pages, it means that your DNS server has not updated yet, you just have to wait (at most 24h, usually less).
If you see "The site has moved to a new server, on which you are currently.", then you are already on the new one.
For those that are tech-savvy enough, you can still force landing on the new server by adding this to your host file:
(but don't forget to remove it later)
For the others it is better to wait
Please report any unusual behaviour, error message or missing picture (normally all were properly transferred, but in case I made a mistake...)
If no problem are seen, I'll remove the lock tomorrow, so pictures and comments can be added again, and the site can then continue its normal life
After that, I'll add the certificate for HTTPS.
