Generally it's correct, that any kind of pump gets destroyed, when there's no liquid any more, but I never have heard, that this is an important topic.
At least not at fuel cars. With a Diesel car you have to avoid and total empty tank, because, when the diesel pump suction air, and the air gets into the injection system, it's very elaborate to fix it.
And annother tipp, well known in the classic car scene: when you store a car for a longer time, some months or years, always fill up the tank to the maximum.
So there will be no condensation, which causes rust inside the tank and dilutes the fuel.

My guess that was intended for these vintage vehicles? I thought this was resolved on these modern cars?
