They tried to restyle it / modify it, cf the Citroën Dyane. But the old 2CV sold better. While it sells well and work well, why replace it? It is like the Renault 4 or VW Beetle.
They restyle/replace cars because people will always new things. But while the old one sells well I guess that they have no reason to replace it.
