Best movie genre ever: Spaghetti-Western
Published 07/08/2007 @ 12:02:36, By Raul1983
Spaghetti-Western is the best genre ever !!

Western films have always been popular in Europe and in early 1960's first German made westerns appeared. During the years of 1964-1976 over 500 euro-westerns were made, most of them spanish-italian production but also German and French films. Filming locations were usually in Spain for desert filming, Pyrenees or Alps for snowy pictures and East-European landscape for hills and rivers (Bosnia-Herzegovina etc.)

From the start European westerns were very different than the typical movies of this genre. Music scores and artistic often shaky way of using the camera was a vital part of the films. Soon almost all great film directors of Europe started to make westerns too. Leone, Corbucci, Sollima, Valerii...

As a result many classic film were born. Of course everyone knows Sergio Leone and his works but there were a great deal of other good directors too. Ennio Morricone composed many unforgettable scores. Other famous composers of this era are Bruno Nicolai, Riz Ortolani, De Angelis and Sante Maria Romitelli.

Here are some of the best films and intros. Just pure art...

Do you mean that you don't like westerns in general or you don't like this particular genre ?

'C'era una volta il west' is in my opinion one of the best movies ever made. Leone's 'Dollar' trilogy is also very good.

Personally I like these musics but not westerns in general.
Except some like "Maverick" which are a different genre (but probably mostly because it is by Richard Donner and with Mel Gibson)

I put all westerns, including the spaghettis in the same genre.
There are a few westerns that I enjoy but generally I don't like them.

agree. In my top 10 for sure. Anyway you made me watch it again  - I started yesterday but had no time, I will finish it today  Harmonica rulez
anyway there is a lot of western movies I saw / want to watch again. But since there are no cars in westerns and historic movies, I am not watching those as much as I want (as they deserve). In last year I pick up mostly movies by the fact wether it is or is not included on IMCDB

I would say 95% of Westerns are free of vehicles but there are exceptions. Leone's 'Fistful of Dynamite' is based on Mexican revolution in c.1915-1920. Few army trucks are seen and also James Coburn (TNT expert) drives a motorcycle.

I agree 100%. My all-time favorite, of course, is Leone's "Once Upon a Time in the West", then his "Dollars" trilogy, with Clint Eastwood, then Henry Fonda and Terence Hill in "My Name is Nobody". Clint Eastwood brought the genre to America with "Hang 'en High", "The Outlaw Josey Wales", "High Plains Drifter" and more recently "Pale Rider" and "Unforgiven".

I say, to each his own taste ...in movies as well as automobiles !

Not many cars in spaghetti-westerns though  (not that it matters). For me almost any genre is fine as long as the film is really good.

I like the (not serious) Italian western-movies with Bud Spencer (Dr.Carlo Pedersoli in real) and Terence Hill (Mario Girotti).
Mainly because of their music of the de Angelis-brothers (also named "Oliver Onions"). But these movies are funny, too.

These are quite beautiful in their own right, but I find myself more inclined to view film titles of the "Noir" genre. Not just for vintage car chases and crashes, but that the story always leaves me guessing how it will turn out.

Film noir is also very interesting. Many of them filmed during and after WWII have a dark and perhaps pessimistic mood. Some European directors moved to US from Germany, Russia and Eastern European countries and influenced this genre with their filming style.

Il Grande Silenzio of Sergio Corbucci is my favourite Italian western, mostly because of the big role of Klaus Kinski, who is one of my favourite actors ever.
