I may have a suggestions for this, could you implent a table which automatically searches the related (but named otherwise) vehicles? For instance the Ford Taunus is called Ford Cortina in the UK. So that means that if someone searches on Taunus he would'nt find the Cortina's. Same applies for Lada, if you search for that, you won't find the VAZ.

In the above example all ADO16 should be named in the table with synonyms. A search on Morris 1100, should also turn up the other ADO16.

I know it perhaps is an enourmous job, and you might get a problem on preformance with searching, but it seems a nice idea doesn't it?
