The first "car" was my three-wheeler pedal car. Not an ordinary three-wheeler, but built in the Morgan car style: one wheel at the rear, chain driven, two at the front with a steering wheel and real drag link steering. It had Dunlop tyres, a bicycle style saddle and a hand-brake -- which was usually broken, but who needs a brake at the age of five when you race your friends in their go-carts? I usually won! It was a present for my second birthday. Couldn't reach the pedals then, but once I could I loved this little racer.
The first big car I steered sitting on my dad's lap. It was an old VW and I was six or seven.
I was twelve when I first drove myself. It was in our family's Austin Maxi on Pendine Sands ... a rather famous place to start driving ...
The following years it was back to muscle power again using a race-bike.
I really learned to drive on a driving-school VW Golf I and shortly after that for a second time on a Bundeswehr MB 1017A.
Having a driver's licence I first drove my family's Fiat 131 Mirafiori -- a bit sluggish until you revved it ... -- and a Bundeswehr MAN 464 KAT 1, an 8x8 monster that was really fun to drive off-road!
My first own car was an old VW 1302S.
