What rental cars you have driven in the past

I assume it had the automatic Autotrac four-wheel drive system with two-speed dual range transfer case? The Autotrac four-wheel drive system is available with a one-speed single range transfer case (no low range reduction gearing) for people who don’t do much offroading.
StabiliTrak electronic stability control (ESC) is standard and includes 4-wheel electronic traction control, but the traction control system is (or was) setup more for on road use rather than off road. GM may have reprogrammed the traction control system since its first introduction. The Tahoe and Suburban still rely mainly on the optional rear automatic differential lock (ADL) for enhanced off road traction.
Did yours have the ADL? Or you didn’t check?

Hmm, it was 2wd and I don't know what differential it had. For a rental, probably just the base diff (a limited slip differential?)

The standard drive-axle has a conventional (open) differential. Suburbans haven’t had a limited-slip differential (LSD) since circa 1972.
If the Suburban was two-wheel drive, then it would have had two-wheel electronic traction control. Four-wheel electronic traction control is only available on four-wheel drive models (this applies to any 4x4, regardless of make).
The average garden variety limited-slip differential (which uses simple clutches to limit excessive wheelslip and to transfer torque) has largely been replaced by electronic traction control, as electronic traction control outperforms it in almost every category. Furthermore, if (emphasis on "if") programmed with clever anti-slip logic, electronic traction control can offer torque control capability very close to that of a differential lock or locking differential.
The rounded-line generation from 73-87 (-91) introduced the first automatic differential lock (ADL), also known as the automatic locking differential (ALD), or "Gov-loc". Gov-loc is an unofficial name, as neither GM nor Eaton (the company that designed the locking mechanism) formally called it that.
Here is the automatic differential lock (ADL) from my rounded-line Chevrolet V-10 Fleetside. The design has been refined over the years since 1973, but it still works and performs in the same manner:
There are many ways to check if the vehicle has the ADL, but here are the two most common ways: You could check the Suburban’s regular production option (RPO) code list. If you see the code "G80", then it has the ADL.
Another way involves are large open parking lot paved with tarmac or concrete. Start the engine, and select any forward gear (also works in reverse). Turn the steering wheel to the hard left or hard right (doesn’t matter). Drive around in a tight circle with light, even throttle being applied. Shortly you may hear a small "clunk" sound, that clunk is the differential locking itself.
You will also hear the inner wheel begin to "bark" or "chirp" as the tire is forced to skip across the pavement to keep up with the outer wheel. Vehicle handling is also reduced, turning is made difficult as both rear drive-wheels want to push straight-ahead. You would not notice any of these negative attributes off road however.

This old review of a 1974 rounded-line Chevrolet C-10 Cheyenne Super Fleetside talks about some of the new equipment changes, including the new automatic differential lock (ADL). It even talks a little about how the rear ADL works.
The ADL was introduced as a replacement for the "NoSpin" differential and the regular so-called "Positraction" limited-slip differentials offered on GM's pickups and utilites. The locking differential offered superior tractive-effort to any limited-slip differential (LSD). Ford and Dodge did not offer anything that could match it in terms of torque transferring capability, as they only offered LSDs in their pickups and utilities. The ADL was optional on both GM’s pickups and utilities, (Blazer/Jimmy and Suburbans).
Currently, the newest version of the ADL is still available as an optional extra on GM’s pickups and utilities. It is standard (along with a few other features like underbody skid plates) with the Z71 off road package.

All of them rented by my parents, with or without me:
white Dodge Neon (California, June/July 2005) P.U! It was a housewifes car, and it supposedly stank of cleaning powder
bronze GMC Savana (Canada, May 2001)
purple VW Polo 6N (Germany, 2004) rented from my uncle while he was recovering from his fall off a highway bridge. The poor lad had crashed his black Punto Mk. I back in 2000 and was nearly hit by a truck when he landed.
silver VW Golf IV Variant (Germany/Denmark, ca. February-June/July 2000)
silver VW Polo 9N (Germany, 2001/2002)
black Mercedes A-Class W169 (or was it a B-Class? Germany, 2005 or 2006.)
black VW Passat B6 (California, 2006/2007)
beige VW New Beetle Convertible (California, 2006)
black VW Jetta Mk. V (California, 2006/2007)
white VW Touareg (California, 2006/2007)

My friend eventually found a house in Saint-Girons. So I had to rent (with her money, of course ) a van for the moving:
Based on a 2006-14 Fiat Ducato Maxi, this van is 8.51 m (27.9 ft) long, 2.22 m (7.3 ft) wide and 3.30 m (10.8 ft) high, with a net weight of 2.78 t (2.74 long tons; 3.06 short tons). As suggested on the side of the van, I'll have to obtain a truck driving license if I need something bigger next time...
I really enjoyed to drive it, even when reversing in the narrow dead-end where my friend now lives

Our rental car for the few days in Manchester & Alton Towers with friends last week. I didn't drive it, though.
It felt rather cheap (well, that's the purpose of a Dacia :D)

Driven three rental cars so far....
1: 2002 Daewoo Lanos...... despite being a year younger and having nearly half of the kilometers that my Mazda Protegé had, that thing had so many weird, strange noises coming out from everywhere, including the engine itself... about the only positive points were that it did got me from A to B and i could play my tapes, which i couldn't do in a car since my Ford Tempo ( which, by the way, had an hungry radio that gulped down a few ' Cassette-Burgers ' .... )
2: 2007 Pontiac G5... was kind of fun, liked having a lot of informations like the temperature outside but couldn't enjoy it that much because of bad weather
3: 2007 Ford Focus ZX4 ... was fun too, but had it in winter after some show-off guy decided to back-up his Cavalier from a 45° angle parking space ' Hollywood style ' without really looking around him and smashed the right rear corner of my Protegé ( i was in the first straight one, he was on the first 45° one ) so i did not enjoy it that much either... but the heated seats were..... .....
As for the Dacia... can't be worst than the one we had here....

Everytime I see this thread, I start thinking about what I've rented. The last time I rented one was in October, and for the life of me, I couldn't remember what I rented. It was so completely unremarkable that I blanked out on what it was. The time before, I had a Dodge Charger (which I liked). And I had a Dodge Caravan when my car was in the shop in the winter, and then an extremely dirty 2016 Subaru Forester loaner car. But my trip in October, nothing. I just found the receipt from that trip and it was a 2014 Chevy Cruze 1LT. Wasn't great, wasn't terrible just basic transportation. It truly left no impression with me.

God I can't stand rental car companies. My Passat is in rehab and I am currently renting a car for most of this week. Ordered an "Intermediate" at a popular rental company (hint: they picked me up), which should be a car the size of a Honda Civic. Was offered two choices a Nissan Note (which would be a downgrade, no thanks!) or a Kia Soul, which according to rental car company land is a "Standard" size (Standards are typically the size of a Toyota Camry). I took the Soul (more like Soul-less). What an uncomfortable, under-powered, ugly shitbox.

2015 Hyundai Accent...I rented it for a week about a year 1/2 ago while my Accord was out of service (distributor started leaking oil internally).
Didn't like the Accent one bit. Shifted awkwardly, especially between 30 and 40mph (would rev up considerably for a while before finally getting into next gear, albeit very late) and I just didn't like being seen in it. Made me miss my 1984 Honda Accord the whole time, I couldn't wait to get it back on the road and ditch the Accent. Sorry Hyundai...
Also rented a 2012 Ford Edge for a trip out to Goldstone Deep Space Communications Complex out in the Mojave. It was decent.

One of my friends bought an Edge last year and likes it. It's on my list of crossovers to look at. She had an Altima Hybrid that she loved until someone rear-ended her and totaled it.
I think the Accent and Soul use the same engine. What kills me is the Soul is smaller than my old Mazda 323 hatch I drove in college, and feel less powerful. Passing cars on the highway was a drag, I'm used to my 200hp Turbo.
