Why didn't you just pick the 20€-25€ one?

Even 50€ a month really isn't that expensive (equivalent to the cost of a gym membership) You could ditch the ads altogether and fund it with donations, if a few of us donated it wouldn't be asking much.

It wasn't available when I decided to move the server, and the 15€ one should be enough (even if it is difficult to evaluate).
The purpose of the ads were not only to pay the server, but also compensate the time passed on developing the new version of the site.
But as suggested by some members I'll probably make a donation option that would then disable ads for these users.

ETA for the pictures copy : about 1h.
After that I have to do a few tests/check, then change the DNS entries (after that, it can take up to 24h for the server change to be visible for everyone, but it is still possible to force that change in the network settings of the computer)

Are you saying you had to take time off work?

If you got 1 Euro a month from everyone on the admin list, that would cover the server fees.

Anyway the ads we have are pretty unobtrusive, I'm just saying maybe we don't need to depend on them too much (before I had no idea what the server costs were) When Google removed their ads because of Sixcyl's nudie pics, it seemed like a bit of a crisis at the time.

No, I do that on my free time.
But I could do other things on that time.

Indeed ads were not annoying, that's why I try to find ads like that: they generate money without annoying the visitors. I do not like intrusive ads.

Is it like, the more obtrusive the ads, the more they pay?

Yes, with the annoying full screen ads, or those that come in the middle of the page, you get good income. But that is so annoying for the visitors that I do not want to put that.
Large ads are not much a problem when well integrated in the design (e.g. in the borders when unused) but that is very annoying when it covers the actual site contents.

Progress on the maintenance: all is copied. Now I'll go to lunch, then I'll check that all is alright by adding a few pics myself, then I'll change the DNS and explain how you can force the change locally if you wish to access the new server directly.

Done, the new server is active.

I hope there aren't bugs I missed, as I had to make a few changes in the code.
If you notice anything unusual on the site (error message, strange behavior), please report it here.

If you still see the old site (i.e. the one with the message about the site being read-only) you either have to wait that your DNS server has updated the site's IP, or you can force the site's address in your host file.

To force the site's address on Windows:
Go to c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc
Copy the file named "hosts" to another folder (your documents folder for example), open it with notepad, add the following at the end:
5.135.160.202 imcdb.org
5.135.160.202 www.imcdb.org
5.135.160.202 pics.imcdb.org

This forces the computer to use 5.135.160.202 as IP address for the imcdb domain rather than the one obtained from your ISP's DNS servers.
Save the file, copy it back to its original folder, overwriting the current one.
Restart you web browser.
In a few days, remember to go remove these lines (just in case of, for a future address change).

On Linux:
There is a host file somewhere in /etc, you can edit it the same way I think. I am not sure what you have to do after to make the changes actives though.

On MacOS:
Probably similar to Linux, but I can't help you there :ohwell:

Note for admins: you'll probably have to log off and log in again to be recognized as admin rather than regular member.

At the same time, I also started a test with a new ad company. Do not hesitate to report problems related to these ads.

What about iOS? Or is that similar to MacOS and Linux?

Internally it is similar, but I doubt you can modify config files like that...

Anyway, usually just by waiting it should be fine in a few hours. Alternatively, you can try to access the site without the www in front of the name if you usually go on the version with them, or vice-versa (but you'll still have a problems seeing the pictures in comments, as they are all only on pics.imcdb.org)

I was able to connect to the new site by running tracert at the line command box. The pics.imcdb.org has yet to assigned to the new dns address after I attempt to run tracert with that site. (The picture thumbnail has yet to show up.) I'll wait until the ip address at the dns has been refreshed.

Yes, normally after a few hours the change should be active without doing anything special, or in the worst case tomorrow.

I do not really notice a difference, it is difficult to evaluate though.
One thing is that the loading of the ad blocks the page refresh for a ½ or ¼ of second, that's a problem we weren't having since a month, when Google stopped the ads  (and possibly Google ads weren't loading that way).

At some times the other one was slow too, it is usually when search engines are indexing it.
Right now the load on the server CPU is quite lower than the previous one, where the database process was often rather high, especially in the last weeks. Now with more memory it seems to work better.
