Subject: Do you like smileys?

How do people feel about smileys? I found them good at first when I was new here, but over time I come to find them slightly inane sometimes, not all the time of course, it depends on how they are used. Sometimes I find this one a bit irksome  and sometimes when people use this one  I wonder why it is being used, especially someone is disagreeing with me. To me that one means "no worries, my friend", so usually it's OK, although sometimes I think it's used a little too often, so it seems a little overfriendly. And I've never really understood this one :oh: , to me it's like that fed-up sigh people use in arguements. Although at least ones like this  aren't used too often.

I think the thing is text can look very stark and blank, so people might read too much into it unless you reassure someone with a happy smiley. You can't use different tones of voice over the internet, so it does affect communication, when you vocally speak to someone, it's far easier to detect their mood (even handwriting shows more human emotion).

I wish I had more choice of smileys sometimes, but I can never be bothered to spend time searching for more I can use.

I voted for the second one, as I find them useful sometimes when I want to enforce what I mean. I use them on average, but not in every single comment ...

I voted the second one too. In some more serious talks I don't use them, but just to make conversations or comments humorous I do.

I certainly think they have a value. When a discussion appears to get slightly heated, they can take some of the sting out of it - which I think was what G-MANN had in mind. In fact I sometimes wish we had more readily available.

I know that I have to try to stop adding a " " at the end of all my sentences ( )
On internet smiles are often used as punctuation. So instead of a "." at the end of a sentence you put a smiley.

They are not bad at all, sometimes, as G-MANN states when you want everybody knowing the tone you are sayign it with they are usefull, and i dont really mind others using them more frecuently, they are not like those typical cutom smileys people use in the messenger for example, they annoy me, but this small faces arent bad.

Ill vote for the second one though as smileys arent really uefull all the time.

One thing i do and i should not is think on how people can be depending on what kind of smileys they use or not or how frecuently they use them, for example G-MANN ever uses them, or nto as much as others and he seems to me a bit stroppy but i know it has nothign to do how he can be here with how he can be outside here.

I'm not saying anyone should stop using them, it's up to them.

Believe me, I'd never get geniunely angry or upset over anything anyone could say here, whatever people who I've never met in person type on a keyboard from hundreds or thousands of miles away doesn't affect me in the slightest. I'm certainly not someone who gets really riled up over things people do on internet sites.

Whenever I talk with my old friends (who I've spent plenty of time with) on message boards we rarely have to use smileys to express ourselves, because we are familiar with each other's personalities and I can imagine what the words would sound like coming out of their mouths. But here it's a little different, we don't actually know each other that well (although some members have met each other).

I agree with G-MANN that sometimes the meaning of the smiley itself is difficult to understand.
Also, I noticed there are many more available to use on the forum, but if you try to use them on the IMCDb comments they only show up as text.

Well, you can find other smileys to use from other sites, but I've never spent any real time looking.

You can use the forum's smileys on imcdb, it is just the syntax that differs:
you have to put the code of the smiley between [: and ] rather than : and :
e.g.
  1.  :007:

becomes
  1.  [:007]

(actually the second one works on the forum too)
This may not work for a small amount of smileys, when the code is different from the filename (forum uses code, site uses filename).

I like using smileys so that sometimes I don't sound too serious or too "anal." For example, when I'm correcting someone, I tend to use smileys so that I won't come off too strong...just like you said G-MANN, it's sort of a way of saying "no big worry."

I used to always use smiley's (not just on IMCDb). Sort of grown out of using them often though. I still will use them when I deem it necessary however.

I like the  , on some occasions, whenever high praise is deserved, but the one I can't stand is the :nono: .
14/11/2007 @ 02:10:13: Neptune: Do you like smileys?
... but the one I can't stand is the :nono: ...

For some reason I always thought it looked like it was giving the "middle finger" ...
15/11/2007 @ 00:09:59: wrenchhead: Do you like smileys?
Funny, I never looked at it that way but agree I don't like it much. If I want to admonish someone I can generally find better ways than a smiley.
31/12/2007 @ 14:19:04: G-MANN: Do you like smileys?
I never use this one  because I think it looks stupid.

As for all these smileys available here on the message board, there are so many of them over 30-odd pages I've never bothered looking through at all (most of them I'd never want to use anyway).
31/12/2007 @ 14:38:57: CrazyCars: Do you like smileys?
:abon: This is a bit wierd :007: I don't see where this would be needed
