I remember reading about this Expedition long ago in a car magazine then. I was surprised to see it on ebay today.

The owners specially ordered the vehicle for towing a large boat they had recently purchased. Their smaller Ford Explorer was not capable of towing the large boat so they opted to replace it with the more heavy-duty Expedition. Ford called them and told them the Expedition was theirs for free. They traveled to Michigan to take delivery of the vehicle. The owners have since modified it, I do not like the wheels or custom headlamps ...

How come did Ford give them the Expedition for free?

I guess because it was the one millionth one made. There was a plaque that was put inside the vehicle with it’s production number.
