Shouldn't entering "Farina" in the Model box give a few results?

e.g. < http://www.imcdb.org/vehicle_15002-Austin-A40--Farina-.html >
25/01/2006 @ 21:43:10: antp: Search
by default the search is done on the begining of the model name. So you have to either search for A40 or use the advanced search and specify that you want to search for cars where model contains Farina rather than those that begin by this.

Thanks.

That certainly brings up the A40s, but what about , say, the A60s?

BTW - What are the three little boxes under the includes box for?

Using "ado16" brings up some e.g. < http://www.imcdb.org/vehicle_19153-MG-1100-ADO16-1962.html >, but not others e.g. < http://www.imcdb.org/vehicle_17929-Austin-1100.html >.

because the second one is not listed as ADO16. Should I add it?
Lots of cars are missing details.
The boxes are to specify in which part of the model name you want to search. The first is the common "commercial" model name. The second ("chassis") is the internal code used by the factory and by the fans, like ADO16 in this case (or the W-codes of Mercedes, E-codes of BMW, etc.)
The last one is a field that usually holds extra info like body special info, type of vehicle, nickname, etc.
25/01/2006 @ 23:00:49: keef: Search
Ah, OK. Yes - Austin, Morris, MG, Riley, Vanden Plas, Wolseley 1100/1300s are all ado16s. Do you want me to list them here or add a comment to each entry I find?

Appreciate lots of missing details: I can help add things if you tell me where/how.

Thanks for info on boxes, should they be marked or a note in the FAQ or similar?
25/01/2006 @ 23:26:33: antp: Search
If I can rename all of these the 1100/1300 of these makes to ADO16, no need to list them, I'll do for all
In the other case (i.e. if it concern only some models), it is like what you prefer, either post a link here or add a comment.
This also applies for other corrections: we often check the comments to make the changes suggested.
About the search options, I should detail that in the FAQ of the help page (I do not think I've put info about that yet) and provide a link to it in the search page.

Have added a note to all 1100/1300 pics.

Great site: really is a lot to get your teeth into.

I may have a suggestions for this, could you implent a table which automatically searches the related (but named otherwise) vehicles? For instance the Ford Taunus is called Ford Cortina in the UK. So that means that if someone searches on Taunus he would'nt find the Cortina's. Same applies for Lada, if you search for that, you won't find the VAZ.

In the above example all ADO16 should be named in the table with synonyms. A search on Morris 1100, should also turn up the other ADO16.

I know it perhaps is an enourmous job, and you might get a problem on preformance with searching, but it seems a nice idea doesn't it?
03/02/2006 @ 23:05:31: antp: Search
I already made an auto-replacement for some makes (e.g. VW => Volkswagen, Mercedes => Mercedes-Benz) but as you sait it could be extended.

On the other hand, it would maybe be better to find a better way to organize the vehicles rather than rely on search. That's one of the current problems: how could we list the vehicles more efficiently than simply order them by make & model...
05/02/2006 @ 20:21:26: wrenchhead: Search
It may be useful to order the vehicles by make, model and decade of manufacture (or other time measurement).

That would tend to separate new cars from old ones.
05/02/2006 @ 20:37:09: DIEHARD: Search
Of course rather than useing it only in the search you could make the sybnonyms table visible on a page... If there is input into this synonyms table it doesn't seem really hard to make it visible...you just have to find the right place to put it...

To organize them better than on make and model...I don't think there is a better way. However with each car you could put up a link to the synonym table for that specified car, it would be a better user interface and would be more easy to find the same cars, which have a different name in another country.

So what I am saying actually is to put up a standard link with each car description, pointing to the synonyms of the car.

auto replacement is in in my opinion a different subject, it is just an help on the search to find certain makes that are also common known as another name.

There is a slight difference between that and an official other name supplied by the manufacturer....

wrenchhead >> Grouping car by "generation" was one of the thing that I'd like to add. But it requires a manual operation: we have to at least define the model names for each group. And it won't be very easy to make something automated with long model names that we often have (e.g. there is often more than just the basic model name used as model on the site).

DIEHARD >> For sure such info would be useful for the page that displays all vehicles of a make. Maybe we could also add it for some models, but then it will increase very much the number of page/links that have to be made. If we have already an info page for each make we could get most of the useful info I think.

AS an example http://www.imcdb.org/vehicle_22828-Austin-1300-ADO16.html has [ado16] in brackets, but when you hover the mouse over it it infact indicates it searches for Austin+ado16 not just ado16. Is that right?
23/02/2006 @ 15:23:11: antp: Search
Yes, because for most of the cars it is better to do the search like that (Mercedes, BMW, ...)
I would have to make a more specific search, depending on the make. Austin/Morris should not include make in chassis search I guess.
For some other cars a search on that code is not useful, or should include model name in addition of the make (e.g. Opel's A/B/C/...)
23/02/2006 @ 15:29:04: keef: Search
Fair enough. In that case shouldn't [Austin ado16] be in the brackets?

Not sure what you mean by "chassis search" but a lot of say Austins, weren't Austins at all but BMC or Leyland etc.
23/02/2006 @ 15:35:41: keef: Search
Interestingly I just did a search for "BMC" and only came up one one result :-

http://www.imcdb.org/vehicle_15214-Willeme-BMC-unknown-1962.html
23/02/2006 @ 15:42:26: keef: Search
A search for "Leyland" turned up loads including the J4, which when used as a search gave http://www.imcdb.org/vehicles.php?make=&model=j4 which I would have thought would have come up under "BMC"?

Not sure what you mean by "chassis search" but a lot of say Austins, weren't Austins at all but BMC or Leyland etc.

Then it would be [BMC ADO16], but I do not think it is useful to precise it.
Morris/Austin is a little like Opel/Vauxhall: no need to precise that they are made by GM, and there is no link between identical models on the site.
BMC is not referenced anywhere for all the Austin/Morris of the site, so we cannot use it in searches.

[q]Then it would be [BMC ADO16], but I do not think it is useful to precise it. [/q]

That was my original point, if it's not precised, why does it show up something different?

[q]BMC is not referenced anywhere for all the Austin/Morris of the site, so we cannot use it in searches.[/q]

I realise that, which is why I'm suggesting it. Would it not be useful to search for all GM cars for example?
