As was mentioned here http://www.imcdb.org/movie.php?id=421974 (and other times before), how about creating an version of this site for planes (and possibly helicopters although this site already exists: http://www.rotaryaction.com/ ). It would be good, and I feel with this kind site it would be more appropriate to list all the planes in a film because they are less commonplace and mundane than many consumer motor vehicles.

But I'm afraid I don't feel I can volunteer to be the creator/webmaster of this new site, my computer knowledge isn't huge (nowhere near the level of antp) and also I don't know a huge amount about planes (although I still find them interesting).

So how about it?

Even if I had time for making that, I do not really have the interest of doing it (but anyway I do not have time :D)
If someone knows PHP enough to make changes in the code and run/maintain the site, I could give IMCDB code like what I did for IGCD.

It would be good but i can't help you. I would like to see a Cartoon car database as i mentioned on the page for Family Guy but i couldn't do it.

I realise you don't have the time, but since you gave a hand to Star Wars Fanatic and Rinspeed in creating IGCB, maybe someone could make an aircraft database with a little help from you. I know nothing about programming (I've never even made my own website), but how much time would a site like IMCDB or IGCB require to maintain, once the site is designed and some guidelines are set, surely it doesn't require hours every day? I know you spend a lot of time on this site because it's labour of love, but what would be the mininum amount of time and maintainance required?

Anyway I don't think I'm the right person to manage a movie aircraft website (because I just don't know enough about aircraft), maybe sixcyl could do it? Or maybe a few of us could maintain the site as a team (as programmers, rather than just admins)
13/01/2008 @ 19:22:07: CrazyCars: Internet Movie Aircraft Database
Who would pay for it?
13/01/2008 @ 19:23:24: G-MANN: Internet Movie Aircraft Database
Well, how much would it cost?
13/01/2008 @ 19:25:08: CrazyCars: Internet Movie Aircraft Database
I do not know how much a website costs to run, antp will have to answer that.
13/01/2008 @ 19:30:35: G-MANN: Internet Movie Aircraft Database
And by the way, with this site I won't complain when background aircraft images (unless it's impossible to clearly identify something) are added, because there aren't as many planes in most movies as cars. And you don't see planes all the time (unless you work at an airport/airbase). Although this time maybe we should set some strict rules about aircraft in cartoons and animated stuff (perhaps only things that closely resembles only one distinctive plane/chopper should be listed, no "Made for Movie" drawings/models).

Of course I've already think about a IMADB - Int.Movie Aircraft Data Base and would be very pleased if it could exist. Unfortunately I'm not the right person to makes and maintain such a website, my knowledge in programming and informatic in general is too weak...
So? how can we do? Any one else?
13/01/2008 @ 19:33:08: G-MANN: Internet Movie Aircraft Database
But how much knowledge would someone need? I have virtually none, but could I learn? Did Star Wars Fanatic and Rinspeed know much about programming before they made IGCD?
13/01/2008 @ 19:35:55: G-MANN: Internet Movie Aircraft Database
Who else here is into planes and helicopters? We'd certainly need some identifiers.
13/01/2008 @ 19:47:12: CrazyCars: Internet Movie Aircraft Database
I have an interest in planes, at one point i wanted to become a pilot, and a while ago considered going to air cadets so i would like to see an aircraft database. I'm sure my uncle would too, he is a real plane enthusiast.

About the programming, Rinspeed does all the technical stuff for IGCD (i think) so he handles it. We already have an interest in starting this site up, we just need someone to help start it up.
13/01/2008 @ 22:13:43: wrenchhead: Internet Movie Aircraft Database
I have a reasonable knowledge of WWII era planes and would contribute what I could but don't have the time to run a website.
13/01/2008 @ 22:42:46: Rinspeed: Internet Movie Aircraft Database
the first thing, it's to see what are the changes to do at iMCDB to do this site.
13/01/2008 @ 23:34:58: G-MANN: Internet Movie Aircraft Database
I would fine with the Aircraft database using the same design and colours as this site, except with a picture of a plane at the top instead of the Pontiac GTO. We could use the same star rating system as this site.
13/01/2008 @ 23:39:31: Rinspeed: Internet Movie Aircraft Database
There also type of aircraft to do. What about the space aircraft like in Star Wars, or the custom aircraft/car like the cars in 5th element?
13/01/2008 @ 23:57:57: G-MANN: Internet Movie Aircraft Database
Well none of the stuff in Star Wars or Fifth Element or other sci-fi films actually flies, they are just models or CGI, you might as well include the Starship Enterprise. Personally I wouldn't bother to include flying cars and spacecraft, just stick to real aircraft. I mean we all know what X-wings are, and do they appear in any films apart from Star Wars? They are just a fictional creation.
13/01/2008 @ 23:59:24: G-MANN: Internet Movie Aircraft Database
But Rinspeed, how much work did it take to build IGCD, how much does it cost to run, and how much maintainance does it require?
14/01/2008 @ 10:41:47: antp: Internet Movie Aircraft Database

Sure, but Rinspeed knew enough PHP to make few changes himself with my help (I did not make the changes myself), and he knew how to host a website

but how much time would a site like IMCDB or IGCB require to maintain, once the site is designed and some guidelines are set, surely it doesn't require hours every day?

Indeed if I do not check comments etc. it probably do not require much time. But who is responsible of the site contents then?

I do not know how much a website costs to run, antp will have to answer that.

I do not know for IGCD but for IMCDB Google Ads pay more than what the hosting costs.
For starting the site at the same provider than IMCDB it would cost less than 30 € per year (currently IMCDB hosting costs a little less than 300 € / year but it will be more within less than 1 year: the site grows)

I would fine with the Aircraft database using the same design and colours as this site, except with a picture of a plane at the top instead of the Pontiac GTO. We could use the same star rating system as this site.

What about current make/model system? Is that compatible with aircraft? We already have problems with the tanks and other military stuff which do not really follow that naming scheme... (cf the Cadillac tanks and other disputed names)
14/01/2008 @ 11:50:16: CarChasesFanatic: Internet Movie Aircraft Database
300€ that's a lot...
