I'll move the site to a new server in the next days.
I'll probably do that on 5 and 6 June.
While copying all the data, the site will be available only as read-only (i.e. no adding pictures, no comments, no changes to vehicles, etc.)
As the new server has a newer version of PHP, MySQL and Lighttpd, there may be some bugs, so I'll probably keep the site read-only on the new server for a day just to be sure it works fine.

Any preview on what the new site will look like or will it remain the same?
I hope it isn't too much of a change since I kind of grown attached to the current site

The site will change, the current design is bad and outdated.
But that's not the subject here
And it is not what will change now, as moving to a new server will not be visible (except for bugs that may occur...)

Database copied.
Copy of vehicle pictures started, that will take a while...
05/06/2014 @ 11:24:25: antp: Site maintenance planned
ETA: 7~8h for 650 000 files (24 GB)
And after that, there are the comment pictures to copy.

Can't wait to see the result!

You're very tight-lipped about this, aren't you?

You don't say G-MANN. Finally I'm not the only one.

Antoine won't explain what is "bad" about the current design or how it's so outdated. If it's not broken don't fix it. And by 'it' I mean the design and aesthetics of the site. I've seen sites before that have tried to modernize their look and have failed. I don't think there's anything wrong with the way the current site looks.

Hello Joey. That is off-topic discussion, this thread isn't about the new version of the site.
05/06/2014 @ 17:26:38: G-MANN: Site maintenance planned
It might seem a bit old fashioned to some but it does the job pretty much and it doesn't get irritating glitches. Being more basic is probably an advantage.

Well I hope the site won't look like iOS 7 when it's finished. :absynthe:

Main pics are copied, now it is finishing copying thumbnails of main pics, and starting comment pics. I'll try to launch this evening the copy of the thumbnails of comment pics, to try to finish tomorrow in the middle of the day.

Great to see that it's going so fast!

That's what I believe but not my place to say. I never saw anything wrong with the current design besides a few technical issues but other than that, I thought it functioned well and was unique compared to a lot of other sites. I just hope the new site carries that forward. :disapointted:

Off-topic: Terra, I just saw your birthday's coming up! What do you wish for?
05/06/2014 @ 21:08:37: Terra: Site maintenance planned
Off-topic: My wish? A 1992 Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser (My Dream Car! :D) But I don't think that's going to happen :disappointed:

I hope that the new engine would give us plenty of speed and space
05/06/2014 @ 22:48:18: antp: Site maintenance planned
Space: less actually (1 TB instead of 2), but only 500 GB were used. And the 2 To were rather expensive, so I'll wait before moving again (or move just the comments-pics or vehicles-pics without moving the whole site). The idea was to have a cheaper server due to Google Ads problems.
Speed problems were rather due to the architecture of the database and its size. That's one of the things that we hope to solve with the new site.
The new server has a difference processor (much newer, but more entry-level), I do not know yet if and how it will impact performance.
It has more RAM (8 GB instead of 4) so that could help with the database slowdowns (more data in cache, faster access).
05/06/2014 @ 22:57:03: rjluna2: Site maintenance planned
Already occupied by half of the space! :bigeyes125:

I'll try to continue to limit vehicles pictures upload to the site
05/06/2014 @ 22:57:19: mike962: Site maintenance planned
wouldn't help to be stricter regarding extra vehicle thumbnails  , it's rather useless to waste space with thumbnail of boring common vehicles all the time like "some" uploaders do it , heck some of them could be deleted too. no need to have 7-8 thumbnail of a common Crown Vic, BMW E39 , Cadillac etc

according to the statistics Lateef is the king extra of thumbnails so far

also perhaps clean some of the (gomsel) docus and others which we don't really need, and the hoards of poorly visible and rather unidentifiable vehicles in the unknown section :ddr555:
