 We were poor and all I could afford was a 40 year old car - cost a huge $45. You will be happy to know that I have progressed - I now have a 28 year old MG

1979 Chevrolet SWB cargo van. My father bought it and got it running back in the mid-1990s, when I was about 10, and I drove it for the first time around then, too.

It was bronze with tan interior and orange carpet, and at some point had been used (I suspect) as a mobile whore-house. There were red lights strung up in the interior, and the bad was customized with a king-sized bad (with a very suspiciously stained mattress).

I've leaned to drive on a 1985 Opel Kadett E Stufenheck, I also made some hours on a VW 181 ("Thing" in the US).

Later, at the army, I had extra lessons on the Mercedes 1017 and -it was neccessary, even if you had a private license- on a VW T3 Transporter and a Mercedes G (Bundeswehr-name "Wolf").

(had to take up poles, car had to be towed out!!) Re-took in the LTD,I passed it perfect!

I learned driving in the Fahrschule (driving school) with a red VW Golf II Diesel with 55 hp. When learning how to drive away on a hill, I managed to kill the engine twice, then drive away with lots of wheelspin. After that I was successful with this exercise.

Theoretical exam is taken in Germany in the driving school, but with an external licensed auditor. The practical exam usually takes between 30 and 60 minutes and happens with the driving school's car you have been learning on - the red Golf, here.

After passing the exam, I drove around from time to time with Dad's Alfa Romeo Alfa 75 1.8 i.e. My first own car was a 1987 3-door white VW Golf II "Bistro" with 70 hp petrol engine and sunroof, followed by a 1983 VW Passat station wagon with 90 hp petrol engine and a pale blue metallic colour. Had it had a roof rails, it would have passed as surfer vehicle.

From next year on, I will have a shopping basket on wheels, a 54 hp Fiat Seicento. Enough car for a single person not planning to drive long distances with it and living 5 minutes by bike from my employer.

OK, here's a little bit of history ... my father was nearly 20 years old at the outbreak of World War I, and when he was called up was the proud owner of a four-cylinder FN motorcycle. When he was training (he never made it to the front, btw) some officer or sergeant asked if any of you 'orrible lot could drive, and Dad, knowing no better, stuck his hand up ... never having driven a four-wheeled vehicle. It seemed that the camp, near Catterick, was on the estate of a cough-mixture millionaire, whose chauffeur had been called up and who liked to go to board meetings in Leeds and get thoroughly drunk afterwards.
So Dad found himself in charge of a huge Daimler limousine like a small bus ... on which he had to teach himself to drive!
My poor Dad never was a very good driver ...

The first vehicle I drove on the road was a 1962 GMC 1 ton wrecker, 6 cylinder, 4 speed, with a Volkswagen Beetle on the hook, in 4 inches of fresh snow in Syracuse New York, I was 12/13 at the time and we were way out in the country. I drove it 25 miles with the trucks owner (Charley) riding shotgun. He taught me a lot about driving wreckers. Charley did all the towing for the local Chevron gas station near our house. At the age of 16 I took my driving test in my Dads 1968 Chrysler Newport, aced it, but in all fairness, Id already been driving on the road in my Moms Maverick for about a year. I had to sneak the Maverick into the teachers parking lot at my High School because freshmen didnt have parking privileges in the student parking lot. In drivers Ed (required by law) I used to take the VW Beetle and operate the dual pedals in the car for the girls, which made me very popular. The rest of the Drivers Ed car were automatics... Good memories

I learnt to drive, and passed my test, in 1993/94, in a 1992 Fiat Tipo diesel. Never saw another one at the time being used as a driving school car...

Same here: Learned in 1994 on a Fiat Tipo Diesel - and I thought this must be the only Fiat Tipo driving school car far and wide.

First car I ever drove over a distance of more than 50m was a 1980 or 1982 Ford Escort Turnier (station wagon) or maybe (don´t recall safely) a VW Derby of it´s 1st generation. First car I ever drove in my life was most likely a 1959 Cadillac Coupe de Ville.

As I have mentioned before, my first "formal" drivng was done in my driving instructor's silver Oldsmobile Alero. It was quite a basic car, being the base GX model with manual windows and mirrors, 140hp 2.2 liter 4-cylinder, and 4-speed automatic transmission. But it did the trick even though it was cheap

In fact here's a picture of it:

And yes, that is indeed me in the driver's seat, giving the "thumbs-up"

I started driving when I was 14. A friend and I stole an old pos Ford truck. I have no idea what it was but I know it was smaller than a ranger and a four speed. Neither one of knew how to drive and shift. We just saw the keys in it and took it out to the desert.... We tore it up. We did eventually figure out how to shift it and we were on our way. Oh, Yes we did get busted and yes we paid for what we did, by having our dad's beat us up.... Back when that was allowed.....

I've had cars and been driving long before I had a license... Mainly to do arrands for the family.

The first car I actually bought was in 1983. It is a 1969 Plymouth Belvedere and paid $500. Still have it too. I like to drive around the neighborhood making a racket! Brings back a lot of memories...

In Italy, you can use (for do the driving exam) only the driving school's car.
I can choose between a black Fiat Punto 1.2 MkII Like this:

http://www.opeltiezzi.com/usato/image/products/Fiat Punto Nera [640x480]1.jpg

Or a blue Peugeot 207 1.4 Hdi like this:

http://www.pctunerup.com/up/results/_200812/20081224155349_peugeot_207_4307500A.jpg

I have choose the Peugeot because is diesel and simple to drive.

The test was not so difficult, because I have turned only in the little city where I live and there's not traffic; a bit in the downtown and a bit in periphery, a U-turn and a parking on the side of the road ( I don't know the name in english  ) Back to the driving school, thanks and Merry Christmas at the examinator
