Site maintenance for 2007-12-27

I will have to lock changes made to the site for few time, to make an update in the alternative title system (to have something more like imcdb).
So while that update will be done, all edit/additions/comments/etc. will be disabled.
The operation will only take few minutes, one hour at most, and I hope to do it on 27 December (probably in the end of afternoon, CET), I'll display a message on the site 15 minutes before doing that.

Changes:
I dropped the movie fields "English/US title", "French title" and "contributors list", to replace them by separate tables.
For most of you this does not mean anything I know
Now it is possible to have a list of alternative titles, like what IMDB does. Even just for the French titles it was needed as Canada/Québec often has a different one. So now we can also include Spanish, German, etc.
I just ask to not put useless titles: when the title of your country is the same as another country it is maybe not useful to repeat it. If an alternate title is used in many countries it is better to not include a country info (same for English international titles).
In the same way, including "working titles" and other temporary titles is not useful: we'll stick to "release" titles (theatrical, dvd, etc.)
To add/edit these titles:
Now in search results / movie list, all alternative titles are displayed, not only the French or English one depending on the language used on the site.
I also modified the contributors list system. Now there are links on nicknames, I knew that some wanted that (e.g. Garco and Modell, for who I add to add special code to convert the forced links that were in contributors field )
I moved the contributors list to the bottom of the movie vehicle list, to keep that space for the alternative titles list, and also because it was a much less useful info for visitors.
I hope that it is not a problem, but if most of the members want to have it back at its old place, I can easily move it. Problem is that it starts to take lots of space there.
Both features use the same style of edit window/form. If you have question on how to use these, do not hesitate to ask me.
I also added a new search option, but I did not set it by default as it does not work so good (main problem is for short words: it ignores words that are less than 3 or 4 letters).
You can test it from the search page by selecting "similar to":
if you search "fast & furious" for example, with the default old engine it finds nothing, but now it finds the wanted results + few other ones:
http://www.imcdb.org/movies.php?titleMatch=0&title=fast+&+furious&yearMatch=0&year=- &movieType=-1

It's probably a good thing there aren't many Asian members on this site, because English language titles get very bizarre translations in places like China and Hong Kong. Even some European countries occaisionally give weird alternate to movies, apparentely an alternate French title for "The Matrix" is called "The young people who traverse Dimensions while wearing sunglasses" (that'll fit onto a billboard)

I don't know if it's 100% true (could be a French Canadian title) but I read it here: http://www.monzy.com/?p=93
And it was also mentioned here: http://www.geocities.com/smvgrey/Titlefun.html

Some of these French titles are actually French-Canadian (which are seen as ridiculous from France)
I do not know from where comes that long Matrix title though.
France : sometimes they do not translate, and when they do sometimes they pick another English title
Québec : they translate everything to French, often with a more literal title, which often sounds weird for us - from France/Belgium.

Great update. Thanks Antoine.
Maybe for a next one, it would be useful to put the link "See all comments about this movie and its vehicles" before the list of pictures, it would then be easier to direcly consult the last postings related to the movie without being obliged to scroll down the long list of pictures (it's the case for most of the TV series).

Most European translations are more sensible, the real howlers come from Oriental countries.
I remember going to Eurodisney as a child and buying some "Happy Families" style playing cards and "Sleeping Beauty" became (forgive me if this is very bad French) "Le Belle du bour du mont". Don't ask me how I remember something like this, I have a funny memory.

In Quebec they translate titles literally? oh well that will make very funny titles indeed, and some with no sense, if i translate some titles literally from english to spanish itll sound horrible

The problem is that putting too much thing above the pic force visitors to scroll for the pics, as they usually come for that rather than for comments. That's the reason why I moved contributors list.
"Sleepy Beauty" became (forgive me if this is very bad French) "Le Belle du bour du mont".
"La belle au bois dormant"

Yes, that's it At the time me and my family thought it was funny how the French could take a very easy-to-say 2 word title and stretch it into 6 words, but I just discovered (through the joys of the internet) that the fairy tale of Sleeping Beauty (The Sleeping Beauty in the Wood) was written by French author Charles Perrault. So it turns out that it was really the English who retitled it.

Great ANTP!
Good work.
(but I agree with ben68 about the "all comments from this movie").

I'll see if I can move that one somewhere else... Or maybe just an icon at the top and the full text link at the bottom? (both providing same functionality)

great work indeed, but I hope there will be not tons of alternative titles for each movie - these info are provided on IMDb and I do not see a big use for those here..

It is useful for people who are searching a movie in the database.
It is probably not useful in all languages, but I know that in French it is (one of the reasons why at first there was only French as alternative title) as many movies are known only by their French title in France & Belgium.

The titles were very fun, but this is all a hoax, in case somebody didn't notice...
