This bas been confirmed/announced this morning.
I wonder what will be the consequences for Australian models (Holden) and South American models (Chevrolet), as these makes still belong to GM but were used for many rebadged Opels

I think I've read that all Aus car manufacture will have stopped by end of 2017 - maybe October. Ford have recently stopped, leaving only Holden and Toyota still operating for a few more months.
So Holden becomes rebadged imports. I'm sure PSA will be happy to keep supplying GM with Opels if it's a profitable direction - it looks as if existing Opel and Vauxhall models will continue to be made for a few years, so PSA might as well keep all opportunities open. GM will probably stipulate licencing arrangements for PSA to take over these product lines, so can add a few clauses to cover continuing supply if they want.
This is a parallel scenario to how GM killed Saab - GM licenced Spyker after their buy-out for continuing access to the Vectra-based GM technology (engines/floorpan etc) in the 9-3 and 9-5 to enable production, but then when Spyker collapsed they refused to consider allowing Chinese bidders have a licence. So Saab was fatally paralysed by GM despite being totally separated. The only assets available were the Spyker-owned factory and rights to the brand, which was not a particularly attractive package without the rights to continue existing products.

I didn't know that the AUS-specific Ford (Falcon) ended
For Holden, there was still the Commodore that was not just a rebadged model... until now: I see it becomes a rebadged Insigna.
So if all are rebadged Opels, it is strange that the make wasn't bought like Vauxhall
Maybe the next Commodore will be a rebadged Peugeot 508

For Holden, the plan is to continue to sell the Opel-based products that were planned:
http://www.caradvice.com.au/529949/done-deal-opel-sold-to-peugeot-parent-psa-commodore-and-astra-unharmed/
"Whether it’s a win for Holden, long-term, is unclear. Indeed, the question may go unanswered – officially, at least – for some time. However, in a statement released today, alongside the PSA and GM announcement, Holden confirmed that we can at least expect the new Opel-sourced Astra and Commodore (Europe’s new Insignia) to remain on the Australian market.
“Holden and Opel have had close ties for many years and delivered fantastic vehicles to Australian customers, including the current all-new Astra and the next-generation Commodore due in 2018. The good news is these product programs are not affected at all,” the statement reads.
“We will continue to work closely with Opel and GM to deliver our vehicle plans with excellence and precision. This includes future, new right-hand-drive SUVs like the Equinox and Acadia that were engineered specifically for right-hand drive markets.”
Likewise, the PSA and GM announcement confirmed “existing supply agreements” for Holden – and fellow Opel beneficiary Buick – will continue.
So, while it is clear that these new GM-developed models will be offered by GM Holden in Australia, their cousins in Europe will be sold, under license, by PSA.
It seems likely, however, that the valuable Astra badge – which will no doubt transfer fully to PSA after the current generation – will again leave the Holden range.
And the next Commodore – if indeed we see another Commodore-badged car after the recently revealed model retires sometime in the early 2020s – will surely be of GM extraction.
There are many questions still to be answered."

There will be also some repercussions here as Buick's line-up has a bunch of Opel-derived vehicles in it
That was my first thought. The Verano (Astra), Encore (Mokka), Regal (Insignia) and Cascada (Cascada) are all based on Opels. What will GM replace them with, in due time ? Newly Opel-developed vehicles ? Newly PSA-developed vehicles ? Or rebadged Chevys ?
And then my second thought : what about the vans ?
For decades, PSA and Fiat had several vans in common : the medium-sized and larger-sized ones, all made in the SEVEL factories. Meanwhile, Renault-Nissan & GM Europe had their own alliance, which resulted in the Trafic/Vivaro and Master/Movano ranges.
But the PSA-Fiat venture is winding down, with Toyota stepping in as partner in the SEVEL-Nord factory, and Fiat rejoining the Renault-GM partnership. But now, with PSA buying Opel & Vauxhall, I guess there will be a re-shuffling of the situation, with Peugeot-Citroën-Opel-Vauxhall-Toyota on one side, and a Renault-Nissan-Dacia-Fiat utility range on the other side, with Mitsubishi and Mercedes-Benz as occasional partners.
Still, I'm a bit sad with this takeover. I've never owned an Opel, but I always liked them (except in their 1998-2004 "cubist" period), and am still interested in the upcoming Insignia/Commodore/Regal sedan and wagon, even though the latter is bloody ginormous for our parking spaces. So the prospect of Opels with Peugeot "DNA" inside is a bit depressing.

Buick will probably be fine. Buick Verano is already going to be discontinued in the US due to slow sales, and the Encore/Mokka was primarily designed by GM Korea so not significantly affected by the deal. Cascada will probably be discontinued after the normal lifecycle; it's a niche product anyway. Next LaCrosse will probably be designed in China, like the Envision. Expect to see more Chinese Buicks overall going forward.

Indeed, I like the look of the new Insignia but I was reading that the Estate is nearly 5metres long. The same goes for newer Mondeos, Superbs etc. I can't help but think that the sheer size of some of the cars in that sector is actually part of the reason that people buy compact executive type cars instead now which are much more popular and much smaller.

Actually, the trend is towards crossovers, everywhere. The sedan market is shrinking as more people turn to them.

I know, but in Europe and particularly the UK there's also a trend towards more upmarket, smaller cars where people buy a saloon or large hatch (this has been the case since before crossovers came on the scene). As an example, last month both the 3-Series and C-Class made the ten best sellers, no large non-premium cars made the list.

Oh but we have those in Belgium. Grey imports with many chrome bits, driven by the kind of people who often pay anything cash in hand.
Mostly Chevys and Rams, but I've seen an F-150 Platinum today.

[...] with Mitsubishi [...] as occasional partner[...].
Mitsubishi being now part of Nissan, let's assume this one will be more than occasional
Talking about trends and pickups, there also a new trend for "small" (US size speaking) models in Europe. See the new models unveiled by makes which usually don't sell such vehicles (Renault Alaskan / Mercedes Benz X-Class or the Fiat Fullback), the fact that the last Ford Ranger sells a lot more than the previous generations or that the VW Amarok is also really present on the roads.
Will there be a new PeugeOpel Campo?

You mean get rid of the existing brands and replace them by another brand that nobody remembers, then scrap everything after six years ? Oh yes, I look forward to the return of Ranger !

Err... - no!
Betweenwhiles GM tried again to station their US-products in Europe - and they failed all the time. Especially Germany is a awkward market about that.
Actually you can buy these monsters obver here. It depends on the local Opel/Vauxhall-dealer, if he has the interest and the connections to look for that.
Frankly said: the US-influence was always more negative than postive for Opel/Vauxhall. Every time, US-standards -about quality, about behaviour, about marketing, about design, about anything- were pushed over here, it became disastrous for Opel.
