Initially, I was going to post this to the "Mass change model info thread", but then Exiv came first, but I thought this request should enough to give its own dedicated thread.

For a very long time, I've been nabbing a bunch of the Alphard and Vellfire entries to correct their generic chassis codes in the past, I'm talking about to those having their drivetrain being unknown or unidentified. As all currently listed, they were wrongly listed with the four or five end digits taken from their official codes that Toyota has given. Wikipedia has already correspond the official generic generation codes for a long time now.

First generation:
[NH10W] and [H10W] weren't the correct ones, please change all of them to [AH10].

Second generation:
[H20W] wasn't the correct one, please change all of them to [AH20].

This was already requested but to be more detailed, [GH30W] and [H30W] weren't the correct ones, please change them to [AH30].

If I become a moderator of IMCDb, I would've changed them all by myself.

I suppose that H10/H20/H30 is the generation part, and that A, G or N indicates something in them?
In the same way, the W at the end probably had a meaning.
But in general I'm rather in favor of generic codes, like the Jx0 codes for the Land Cruiser rather than the more specific ones that also include engine and other details.

As it is a big change, I'll wait a little in case someone wants to comment on that, or if for some reason we want to keep some difference in the names.

There's an article on Wikipedia that explains the "logic" in Toyota chassis codes. It's not complete (some engine options are missing) but it's better than nothing.

Sometimes we get a little too specific, but some like to be very precise. For Toyotas, I usually don't mind, especially with the Land Cruisers that come in different wheelbases and bodystyles. The more specific code can make it easier to find specific models when searching.

On the other hand, if you want to find all Land Cruiser of a given generation, with these specific codes it is less easy.

Yeah, people have been going through them one by one and changing them.

Now if I add, say, a Toyota Avensis rather than finding a general code I now need to find the code for a 2.2 diesel version made on a Tuesday and painted blue, so I don't bother.

Also causes an issue when I want to search for all of them to find something as we don't use the Mk numbetrs.

As you may know, I'm a proponent of specific chassis codes, but there's a way to search for a whole group. For instance, for all E180 Corollas/Aurises/Levins, just type "E18". All the J70 Land Cruisers ? "J7".
