Good to know. But how do I resize those enormous JPGs, I've already made that were once PNG's? Nothing in XnView is telling me what to do.

EDIT: Luckily I found "Microsoft Office Picture Manager."

in VLC go to options, preferences, video, then you set jpg rather than png and you wont have to resize them, try it and tell me.

If you plan to resize/crop images, it is better to capture in png and convert only when/after resizing, else there is a quality loss.
This allows to remove black borders :tongue:

and eventually compress more if needed (i.e. 80% quality / 20% compression), though hat I think VLC's compression is acceptable, unlike MPC which makes way too big JPEGs.

Captures are saved in the same format as the original video, which is stored with a "wrong" ratio for DVDs (I do not know why, though).
You have to resize them using for example XnView.

DVD video is usually anamorphic. The picture is always stored in the raw MPEG data with a 4:3 aspect ratio at 720x480 pixels. The aspect ratio you see on the screen is set by a flag that will tell the player to resize the video.

For using XnView to resize and compress at the same time, all I do is open XnView, then File>Open to open the image. Next I select Image>Resize. Note that if the images do not have the proper aspect ratio, you have to uncheck "keep aspect ratio" and compute which height goes well with the width that you entered.

If you have more than one image, you can use Tools -> Batch Processing.

Do not forget to specify 80% quality in the options when selecting jpeg as output format.

If you have embedded bars, you can use the 'resize canvas' function to eliminate them, though you also have to resize them again to get a correct aspect ratio. You can also do multiple actions at once in xnview which is useful for large batch conversions.

It is usually easier to resize before removing borders if you are not sure on which ratio to use: DVDs with borders use 1.33 or 1.77 (and if you pick the wrong one you'll see it directly), but the cropped movie image itself can be 1.33, 1.66, 1.85, 2.35 or some less common others.

It is a good program (*), but I am not sure that it is especially worth buying it. What program do you currently have?
As free software there is Media Player Classic which works fine (there is also VLC, though that it is a little less easy as it does not allow frame-by-frame playing and the pause is not immediate)

(*) except that on my previous PC it was unable to use the digital output, that's why I started to use MSIDVD and then WinDVD (which are both the same, I got these bundled with hardware that I bought)

Now I have MPC and also VLC (for the fast scenes I use MPC because it has the frame-by-frame function; but usually I use more VLC), anyway, the quality of my images is not very good :/, and I hope that with power dvd the quality becomes better...

Neon, i would like to get MPC, as i always wanted a programme with the frame by frame option, special for when i take pictures of crashes, could you please tell me where did you get it? and if you get it from internet could you link me to the site you got it from?
